Bonavita rosso description:

Giovanni and Sanni Scarfone started Bonavita Azienda Agricola in 2004 out of a garage, developing and growing the azienda from 600 to 15,000 bottle production currently. The azienda is situated spectacularly on highlands above Messina in the tiny Faro geographic indication of northeast Sicily. The two contradas are well-drained from the steep incline and one’s feet sink deeply into the dry-farmed and friable soil. The southerly Mistral reaches the vineyards over the nearby Tyrrheanean Sea, and on its southern side the property is protected by highlands from the hot and humid Scirocco winds from Africa. The Scarfones use massal selection to preserve the unique Sicilian DNA of their Nerello and Nocera varietals. The grapes are organically grown, and copper and sulfur treatments are limited to three times/year to protect the vineyard environment.

Bonavita Rosso from Faro, Sicily, is made from Nerello Mascalese (65%), Nerello Capucio (20%), and Nocera (15%). Vines are trained either to albarello or cordon sperronato. Following one month of maceration and fermentation, the rosso spends two years aging in large format oak and one year in bottle.

In the glass light to medium ruby. On the nose are red fruit, leather, earthy notes. On the palate there is high acidity, youthful and aggressive tannins, and notes of red fruit, garrigue, leather and cigar box.
